The Sport Classic name, first introduced in 2009 with the 997, drew inspiration from the color Dolphin Grey in the Porsche 356 era to create Sport Classic Grey, and the rear ducktail from the acclaimed 2.7 RS from the early 1970s. The Turbo widebody, at the time exclusively for all-wheel drive and turbo cars, added stance to the 997 along with several other design callbacks that made it an instant classic. For the 992, Porsche decided to take that same motorsports formula and let the designers in Stuttgart extend farther than before, yielding this car: the 2023 Porsche 911 Sport Classic.The 2023 Sport Classic is an exercise in making the best driving dynamics with styling to match. Limited to only 1,250 examples worldwide, the Sport Classic instantly became a classic. With a 542 horsepower 3.7L twin-turbo engine paired to a 7-speed manual transmission, the only transmission offered, power is sent to the rear wheels only, a callback to the original Porsche 911 Turbo first launched in 1974. Throwbacks to previous 911s include the use of wood trim on the dashboard, a Heritage Design interior harkening back to original cars, pepita fabric inserts, analog RPM and sport chrono gauges, and of course the signature ducktail spoiler over the engine in the rear.Just because the Sport Classic is retro-minded, doesn’t mean that it was lacking in the technology department. As a part of Porsche’s continual melding of past and present, each Sport Classic was heavily optioned from the Porsche factory with the most popular options.
